The Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Guimarães Debate Session
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now a vital component of contemporary society. Its influence is perhaps comparable to a formidable force, potentially holding sway over global dynamics in a way not seen since the advent of the nuclear age. The critical question, therefore, is this: How do we successfully harness this enormous power for collective benefit, and how do we effectively mitigate its potential harms?
The applications of AI are vast and almost boundless. Today, we can utilize AI for a multitude of purposes: to motivate or manipulate public opinion, to provide essential assistance, to facilitate deception, to drive global commerce, to revolutionize fashion and sports, and much more.
This leads us directly to the central ethical dilemma: Does the ultimate impact of Artificial Intelligence—whether beneficial or detrimental—rest entirely in the hands of the individual or entity that operates it?
The Guimarães Debate Session
This thought-provoking issue was the focus of a collaborative debate session held at the Cinema Club in Guimarães, Portugal, as part of our completed Erasmus project. The discussion brought together local Portuguese students with their international peers from Turkey, Poland, and Romania.
The activity was designed to highlight the fundamental importance of rhetoric and argumentation in expressing one's views. I recall a pivotal experience from my primary school days where a group won a debate simply by arguing "Milk is actually black"; their victory was determined not by the literal truth of their claim, but solely by the strength and coherence of their persuasive method.
Debate Structure and Outcomes
Students were organized into mixed, international teams and assigned varied themes to focus their discussion, including Fashion, Sports, News, and Politics. Each group was specifically tasked with thoroughly debating both the positive (pros) and negative (cons) aspects of AI within their given context.
This format not only fostered valuable cross-cultural interaction but also required the students to rigorously defend their assigned positions. Following the lively exchange of ideas, a vote was conducted, resulting in a clear winning side for each topic category.
Key Learning Outcomes for the Students
This intensive debate session and the collaborative nature of the Erasmus project allowed the students to gain several essential academic and interpersonal competencies:
Enhanced Critical Thinking: Students moved beyond simple acceptance of facts by having to argue for both the pros and cons of AI. This practice strengthened their analytical and objective reasoning skills.
Improved Communication and Rhetoric: By participating in a formal debate with international peers, students significantly developed their oral communication and public speaking skills in English. They learned to structure sound, coherent arguments and use persuasive language effectively.
Global and Cultural Interaction: Working in mixed groups (Turkey, Poland, Romania, and Portugal) fostered a rich environment for cross-cultural collaboration. Students practiced tolerance and patience while listening to diverse perspectives.
Digital Literacy Awareness: The core subject—the dual nature of AI—provided students with a deeper digital and ethical awareness, helping them understand that technology is a neutral tool whose impact is determined by human intent.
In summary, the students left the session not just with facts about Artificial Intelligence, but with the confidence and tools necessary to engage in informed, constructive, and globally-minded dialogue.
The Question Remains
We now turn the question to you:
Do you believe Artificial Intelligence ultimately works to our advantage or our disadvantage?
